Head of School's Welcome

Head of School's Welcome

It is a privilege for me to be involved in the educational journey of the pupils from Grade One to Grade Six. At the Preparatory School, we recognise the need to offer a curriculum that is relevant, dynamic and engages the child of the 21st Century; an experience that addresses the ‘whole child’ and is not limited to workplace readiness.

In a world with emerging issues such as global warming, famine, poverty and other environmental and social issues, pupils need to be able to communicate and create effective change nationally and globally. Developing a culture of thinking and a curiosity for learning is a key focus within our school. Art Costa’s ‘Habits of Mind dispositions’, Dr David Hyerle’s ‘Thinking Maps’ and Philosophy for Children form part of our shared language and tools to kindle values, curiosity and critical self-reflection.

English and Mathematics are core subjects, and pupils are encouraged to develop a mastery of expertise in these subjects. The pupils are introduced to isiZulu and Afrikaans as their additional language from Grade One. In their Senior Prep years, they then choose one of the two additional languages as a core subject until Grade Six. Integrated Sciences compliments the curriculum as a vehicle to introduce meaningful tasks that require sustained engagement, collaboration, research and the management of resources. Technology forms an important component of their curriculum, with skills being taught on the iPad from Grade One.

Traditional assessment practices have been reviewed, as high stake testing at this age negatively influences the desired outcomes of being able to construct and organise knowledge, consider alternatives, engage in research, address open-ended questions and communicate effectively.

Outside of the academic programme, pupils are encouraged to participate in the afternoon co-curricular programme actively. A wide range of sport and cultural activities enables every child to pursue their interests and develop into well-balanced individuals.

Our aim is to allow pupils the space to shape themselves as critical, creative and reflective thinkers, problem solvers, good communicators, risk-takers, be knowledgeable, principled, caring and open-minded about their world.
