The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme

Presently, Redhill School offers the Independent Schools Board (IEB) curriculum and examination. From the beginning of 2019, with the introduction of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, Redhill School will offer a dual curriculum for students in Grades 11 and 12. Students who enrol in the IB Diploma Programme will have the opportunity to write the IB examination. 

Redhill School is currently fulfilling the IB candidacy requirements and will be authorised to teach the IB Diploma subjects in 2019.

 

What is the IB Diploma Programme?

This is an international programme, recognised by tertiary learning institutions worldwide. It is a challenging and comprehensive two-year university-preparation programme, for students in Grade 11 and 12.

The IB Diploma Programme is research-based and develops disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge. Its holistic approach means that students engage in thinking and discussion, alongside independent research and community service.

The structure of the DP Diploma Programme curriculum:

  • A compulsory core, comprising three components:
    • Theory of Knowledge (TOK) – a critical thinking course which explores the nature of knowledge and teaches students how to make connections across the academic disciplines.
    • The Extended Essay (EE) – an independent research project on a topic of the student’s own choice. This is assessed externally.
    • Creativity, activity, service (CAS) – students engage in a range of experiential and service learning activities to enhance their personal and interpersonal development, as well as a healthy lifestyle and a commitment to social responsibility activity.
  • Six subject groups – students select courses from these subject groups:
    • Group 1 English A Language and Literature HL and SL or Self-taught Mother tongue
    • Group 2 French Ab Initio
    • Group 3 Business Management HL/SL, Geography HL/SL and History HL/SL
    • Group 4 Biology HL/SL, Chemistry HL/SL and Physics HL/SL
    • Group 5 Mathematics HL/SL
    • Group 6 Visual Arts (optional)

Students must take THREE Higher Level (HL) and THREE Standard Level (SL) courses together with TOK, EE and CAS.

Who can apply for the IB?

Grade 10 students may apply for admission to the Programme (which they begin in their Grade 11 year), provided they are achieving at least 75% in the subjects that they plan to take on Higher Level. They must also be achieving satisfactory results in the relevant benchmarking assessments.

The 2019 admission process

Students and their parents must register for an admission interview with our IB Diploma Programme panel. During this interview, the student’s marks, work ethic, career aspirations etc. are discussed.

Michelle Marnitz is the Redhill School IB Programme Coordinator. Michele is an accomplished and experienced educator, having taught at schools both locally and abroad. In 2005, she accepted a post at Cape Town’s Hout Bay International School, where she successfully launched the IB Diploma Programme. She also served as a University Placement Officer, and thus gained a thorough understanding of the expectations and requirements of universities both locally and abroad. In January 2013, Michele was snapped up by the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy, to serve as their IB coordinator and workshop leader. She also served as the school’s IEB Liaison and Chief examinations officer. In 2015/2016, she was the Academy’s Acting Deputy Head. Michele’s impressive track record as an IB programme coordinator, as well as her experience and knowledge of tertiary learning institutions and the IEB, makes her a formidable asset. Redhill School is proud that Michele joined the school in 2017, with the mandate to launch our very own IB Diploma Programme, thus allowing Redhill School to give its student’s more choices.
